This article summarizes the general process of the formation of 5-HMF compound and the status quo of its existence, sums up its pharmacological action and briefly describes the present situation of the study of 5-HMF in compound prescriptions of traditional Chinese medicine. And on this basis the authors of the article hold that 5-HMF may be an unknown active component and can produce original effect in TCM compound prescriptions.
