[Abstract]
With the extensive popularization of the Internet and portable digital devices, digital addiction has gradually emerged as a prominent public health concern. This paper systematically reviews the current application status of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) non - pharmacological therapies in the treatment of digital addiction from three aspects: etiology and pathogenesis, clinical research, and mechanism of action. The study suggests that digital addiction can be subsumed under the category of emotional disorders in TCM. Excessive indulgence in emotions and disordered lifestyles are considered the root causes. The pathogenesis can be generalized as a progressive sequence of "impairment of the mind - imbalance of qi and blood - disharmony of the internal organs". In clinical intervention, acupuncture therapies such as electroacupuncture and filiform needle acupuncture, non-invasive acupoint stimulation methods like transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation and auricular acupressure with seeds, as well as traditional Chinese exercise therapies like Tai Chi and Baduanjin, have demonstrated significant effects in reducing addiction levels, alleviating anxiety and depression, and improving sleep quality. Among them, the decline in TCM syndrome scores was as high as 68.9%, and the reduction in addiction behavior scale scores could reach 37.7%. TCM non - pharmacological therapies may exert their effects by modulating the interaction between neurotransmitters and receptors, thereby influencing the functional state of the reward system and inhibiting the progression of addictive behaviors. The current evidence tentatively supports its therapeutic efficacy. However, in the future, more high-quality research is required to overcome the existing methodological limitations. In future research endeavors, it is advisable to formulate individualized treatment plans by taking into account syndrome differentiation and classification. Additionally, establishing unified operation specifications and constructing a multi-dimensional evaluation system by integrating objective biological indicators with standardized scales are essential steps. These efforts will contribute to promoting the standardized and scientific application of non-pharmacological therapies in traditional Chinese medicine in the prevention and treatment of digital addiction.
